Awareness of Children to Save Energy
In Germany, children's approaches to eco-friendly ideas take many forms. A school, for example, produces electricity through solar panels and students can monitor energy use directly through a cellphone application.
LED light saves a lot of energy. But the light contains more of the blue spectrum and cold light. With that, the sky above the city grew even brighter. This phenomenon is called light pollution.
A rare sight: Clear skies
In order to see the sky like this, one must now go to a faraway place. To a location far from civilization, on a deserted beach, or in the mountains. Wherever there are humans, the sky is always illuminated by artificial light. The result: the starlight fades and the possibility that one day the tark is again visible.
LED light: Brighter and cheaper
The newest types of lamps are very energy efficient, therefore they are increasingly being used. And there is another effect: for street lighting, cold white light of different wavelengths is often used. This strong light amplifies light pollution.
Zone of protection: turn off the light!
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is located in a specially protected zone in Chile. Here, it is forbidden to install artificial light outside the house. ESO is located far from human habitation. But stargazers near the city are trying to reduce light pollution. Cities are increasingly using warm, yellow light for street lighting.

Scientists at the German Research Center for Earth sciences, the Leibnitz Institute and the Universities of Exeter (UK) and Boulder (Colorado / US) are using satellite data and imagery from the International Space Station - ISS to observe changes. This is a 2010 view of the ISS over the city of Calgary, Canada.
Here's a 2015 image taken from the same perspective. It could be seen that the lighting systems were being replaced in all parts of the city. The light is now mostly white. The number of streets has also increased. Infrared radiometer cannot measure light completely even though the intensity is increasing. The problem: the instrument can't recognize the blue spectrum.
The instrument used was a visible infrared image radiometer (VIIRS). The resolution is 750 meters. Data shows the intensity of artificial light from external sources increased by an average of 2.2% from 2012 to 2016.
What does light have to do with economics?
Globally, increases in light emissions are directly correlated with increases in gross domestic product for each country. The largest increases were detected in a number of industrialized countries, with high economic conjunctions.
Light changes the organism's clock
Artificial light changes the life rhythm of animals and plants. The natural sleep patterns of urban birds have changed. Plants that are exposed to artificial light have a slower phase of development.
Smart lights
The question is: do street lights have to be on all night? Although the LED is energy efficient, it is still better to turn it off when not needed. A smart street light is the best solution: the light is activated when the sensor captures human movement. If it's quiet, then an emergency light is sufficient. Author: Fabian Schmidt (ml / as)
